How do I become a Outdoor wedding designer?
I am attending a University and my major is Landscape Architecture. I was wondering if I can use this major with floral and wedding designing. I love watching wedding shows on TV and I am completely attracted to the floral arrangements and designing the theme outdoors. Can someone tell me if this major is helpful to this future hopeful career?
My undergrad is in Interior Architecture. I think the skills you learn are definitely transferable, it's up to you to decide how you would like to apply them. Take a look at Preston Bailey, for example. http://www.prestonbailey.com/
His focus is on transformations of venues with the use of foliage, but there is no reason why you can't do this as well. Just realize that "outdoor wedding designer" may be too narrow, you will probably have to work indoors as well. Take a short floral course, 6-8 months or something to learn how to put together arrangements, boutonnieres, centre pieces etc.
The structural knowledge you have can help with transforming an interior, but keep in mind that you will likely never be asked to alter the topography of a site, or create a berm just for a wedding.
So start off by taking any additional courses or learning any additional skills that you can. Maybe try to start off with a job in a florist shop, or with a wedding planner.
I'd thought of working in the wedding/event design business too, but I think interiors/architecture will be my lifelong love affair.
