Please advise me about laundering saris ?

I have a cotton sari with a gold border....I have sent such saris to the dobie in the past when I was staying in India, and unfortunately it ruined the gold border, as I was warned.
But can I wash such saris myself in cool water with mild soap / detergent without making the border all scruffy?
Or should I simply send it to the dry cleaners ?

P.S. I assume this also applies to silk saris with a gold border ... is this true: that you cannot wash them in cold wash? Thank you again xxx

Send it to dry closest cleaners.
